Giving Tuesday is coming up fast! Is your nonprofit ready?
With funding cuts, rising costs, and demand for services continuing to grow, nonprofits are facing some pretty big challenges right now. Teams are stretched thin, budgets are tight, and finding the time (and energy!) to plan one more campaign can feel overwhelming.
But here’s the good news: People WANT to give. And Giving Tuesday is one of the biggest opportunities of the year to connect their generosity with your mission.
This year, Giving Tuesday falls on Tuesday, December 1, and while the countdown is officially on, there’s still plenty of time to create a thoughtful, effective fundraising campaign.
As our founder Julie Holton Smith shared during a recent episode of Expert Connexions:
“You don’t need a big budget or a complicated campaign in order to make an impact, but you do need to have a strategy.”
Julie sat down with mConnexions Senior Strategist Alexis Neumann to talk about practical ways nonprofits can make the most of Giving Tuesday, even if they’re just getting started. From storytelling and donor engagement to board involvement and day-of marketing, they covered a whole lot of ground!
Let’s break down some of our biggest takeaways so you can put them to work for your organization. And you can catch the full episode here!
First Things First: Don’t Skip Giving Tuesday!
We get it. Between everything happening in your organization, the holidays, and the end-of-year scramble, it can be tempting to look at the calendar and think, “Maybe we’ll just sit this one out.”
Our advice? Don’t!
Giving Tuesday has become a day when people are actively looking for opportunities to support organizations making a difference. Your current donors, potential supporters, community partners, and even people who have never heard of your nonprofit may be looking for a cause to get behind.
The last thing you want is for your organization to be silent when people are ready to give.
Remember, a successful Giving Tuesday campaign doesn’t have to be complicated. Even a small, focused effort can create meaningful opportunities to engage supporters, raise funds, and build momentum heading into the final weeks of the year.
As Alexis reminded viewers: “It’s not too late, don’t panic!”
So, take that deep breath, pull up your calendar, and let’s get planning.
Make Your Mission the Story (And Your Donors Part of It!)
If there’s one thing we love talking about at mConnexions, it’s storytelling. And when it comes to nonprofit fundraising, storytelling can make all the difference.
Think about how many organizations will be asking for support on December 1. Messages like “Support our mission!” or “Help us make a difference!” are well-intentioned, but they don’t always give potential donors a compelling reason to act.
The magic happens when you connect someone’s donation directly to the impact it can make.
Rather than asking supporters to contribute to a general fundraising goal, give them something specific to get excited about.
Maybe you’re raising funds to launch a new program, purchase much-needed equipment, expand your services, or reach more families in your community.
Then show people exactly what their generosity can accomplish.
For example, instead of simply saying you’re trying to raise $5,000, explain what that $5,000 will make possible. Can a $25 donation provide supplies for one participant? Could $100 help fund a specific service? Use examples that reflect your organization’s actual costs and needs.
Better yet, bring the people behind your mission into the conversation. Share testimonials, success stories, videos, or behind-the-scenes moments that demonstrate the real-world impact of your work.
Give people a story they can connect with, a goal they can understand, and a reason to feel excited about being part of it.
Start Building Momentum BEFORE December 1
Here’s a little secret: Some of the most important Giving Tuesday work happens long before Giving Tuesday itself!
One of the biggest mistakes nonprofits can make is waiting until December 1 to start talking about their campaign.
Instead, use the weeks leading up to Giving Tuesday to get people excited, build anticipation, and start generating support.
This is the perfect time to:
- Introduce your campaign. Share your theme, fundraising goal, what you’re working toward, and why it matters.
- Reconnect with past donors. Let previous supporters know what your organization has been up to and how they can make a difference again.
- Engage community sponsors and partners. Reach out to businesses that may be interested in making an early contribution, matching donations, or helping spread the word.
- Give supporters a sneak peek. Share stories, videos, and updates that build excitement for the big day.
- Encourage early donations. There’s nothing quite like kicking off Giving Tuesday with some fundraising momentum already behind you!
Corporate and community partnerships can be especially valuable during this stage. Consider offering recognition and promotional opportunities to businesses that help support your campaign early.
It’s a win-win: Your nonprofit gains support, and your community partners get to share their commitment to a cause that matters.
Your Board Members Might Be Your Biggest Secret Weapon
If your nonprofit has a board of directors, this one’s for you!
Your board members can be some of your strongest advocates during Giving Tuesday. They bring their own personal and professional networks, community relationships, and passion for your mission to the table.
But here’s the catch: You can’t just ask them to “help spread the word” and expect everyone to know exactly what that means.
Make it easy for them!
At mConnexions, we’re big fans of creating a simple Giving Tuesday board member toolkit. Think of it as a ready-to-go collection of resources your board can use to promote the campaign without having to create everything from scratch.
A great toolkit might include:
- Ready-to-send email templates for personal and professional contacts
- Follow-up email and text message templates
- Sample social media posts and graphics
- Direct links to your donation page
- Key campaign messages and talking points
- A suggested outreach schedule so everyone knows what to share and when
The easier you make it for your board members to participate, the more likely they are to get involved.
And don’t stop with your board! Volunteers, sponsors, staff, longtime donors, and other community champions can help extend your reach, too.
Remember, these are people who already believe in what you’re doing. Give them the tools they need to help tell your story!
Giving Tuesday Is Here! Now What?
December 1 has arrived, your campaign is live, and hopefully those donations are starting to roll in. Woohoo!
Now it’s time to put all that planning into action.
One of the questions we hear most often from nonprofits is: How much should we be posting on Giving Tuesday?
There’s no magic number, but there’s one thing we can tell you: A single social media post probably isn’t going to cut it.
Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to show up throughout the day, remind people why your mission matters, celebrate progress, and encourage supporters to get involved.
The key is to mix things up so your content stays interesting, engaging, and authentic.
Consider incorporating:
- Static posts: Introduce your campaign, share donation information, and celebrate milestones.
- Short-form videos and Reels: Highlight your mission, introduce staff or volunteers, and share meaningful stories.
- Stories: Provide real-time fundraising updates, behind-the-scenes moments, countdowns, polls, and interactive content.
- Live video: Give supporters a chance to see the excitement firsthand and connect with your team in real time.
- Progress updates: Celebrate donations, thank supporters, and show how close you’re getting to your goal.
Don’t be afraid to extend your posting schedule into the evening, either. Giving Tuesday is a full-day event, and not everyone will see your content during traditional business hours.
Just remember that every post should have a purpose. You want to keep your audience informed and excited, not overwhelm them with the same donation request over and over.
Don’t Forget About Your Website and Email!
Social media tends to get a lot of attention on Giving Tuesday, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.
Your website and email marketing efforts can be just as important!
Think of your website as your organization’s digital home base. On Giving Tuesday, it should be incredibly easy for visitors to find your campaign and make a donation.
That might mean creating a dedicated Giving Tuesday landing page, adding an announcement banner to your homepage, or featuring a prominent donation button.
Whatever approach you take, make sure nobody has to go searching for a way to support you.
Email is another fantastic way to reach people who already have a relationship with your organization.
Rather than sending a dozen messages asking for donations, consider a few thoughtful emails throughout the day that share different parts of your story.
Start with an exciting campaign launch, follow up with a meaningful impact story or progress update, and close the day with a final opportunity to contribute.
And don’t forget to thank people! A little gratitude goes a long way, especially when supporters can see the impact they’re helping create.
Keep the Momentum Going Beyond Giving Tuesday
Here’s something important to remember: Giving Tuesday isn’t the finish line.
It’s the kickoff to one of the most important fundraising seasons of the year.
The relationships you strengthen, stories you share, and momentum you create on December 1 can carry through the rest of December and into 2027.
Take time after your campaign to thank donors, celebrate your results, provide updates, and show supporters what their contributions are making possible.
Even if you don’t hit every fundraising goal, the connections you make during Giving Tuesday can create opportunities that last well beyond a single day.
And that is something worth celebrating!
