“What if I fall? Oh, but my darling, what if you fly?”
― Erin Hanson
Jill Corrin, our social media strategist, is a former newspaper reporter and public relations professional who found a niche with social media after pioneering the technology for Michigan Farm Bureau (MFB), the state’s largest general farm organization.
Joining MFB in 2000 as media support services manager, Jill oversaw public relations for the organization when social media came on the scene. She quickly grasped the technology’s potential to bring people together to share stories and experiences, and made social media a “pet project” while still juggling PR tasks on a host of state and national issues ranging from the farm bill to livestock disease and consumer perceptions of modern farming. Peers in the agricultural community and colleagues with other state Farm Bureaus regarded Jill as an innovator and frequently sought her help and expertise in learning how to effectively communicate with social media.
In 2012, Jill convinced Farm Bureau’s leadership to create a role dedicated to digital dialogue, and she took on a new position as online communications and new media manager. In this role, which she held through 2017, Jill not only managed multiple social media accounts for the statewide organization but also guided 65 county Farm Bureaus in their use of social media. During this time, she also co-managed an overhaul of MFB’s website and became skilled in content management.
Prior to joining Farm Bureau, the “city girl” worked as a business reporter at The Flint Journal and as a business editor/reporter at The Bay City Times, where she was first introduced to agriculture. Before that, she reported on city government for The Grand Haven Tribune.
Jill earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Michigan State University (MSU), where she held several positions with The State News, MSU’s award-winning college newspaper. During college she also interned with The Jackson Citizen-Patriot’s news team and Oldsmobile Corp.’s public relations staff.
In her spare time, Jill volunteers at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, where she became a trained docent in 2018. The role qualifies her to handle “ambassador” animals and conduct zoo tours along with community outreach activities and educational presentations. She loves handling lizards and snakes. When giving tours, her favorite stop is the spider monkey exhibit.
Jill resides in Grand Ledge with her husband Scott, a fellow MSU alumnus who lovingly arranged for Sparty to crash their wedding reception… because nothing beats being upstaged by a mascot at your own wedding. Jill also is an adoring Dog Mom to Traverse, a Maltese-Pomeranian named after Traverse City, where she and Scott met.
